Our Vision Statement
Greater Beckley Christian School is dedicated to inspiring children to lead Christ-centered lives. We support parents in their God-given responsibility of educating children by striving to provide quality spiritual, academic, personal, and social instruction in the light of GOD'S WORD.
Our Mission Statement
The mission of Greater Beckley Christian School is one of preparing children to live a productive life for the Lord Jesus Christ. While most graduates of Greater Beckley Christian School will choose to continue their education beyond high school, the focus of the curricular and instructional systems will be one of helping each child grow, both spiritually and academically from whatever level of spiritual and academic achievements he has reached. Admissions policies will reflect what the school is able to do for those children admitted. Attention will be given to the following three areas:
Greater Beckley Christian School is dedicated to the edification of children in accordance with Ephesians 4:12, "For the perfecting (equipping) of the saints for the work of the ministry…" Therefore, attention will be given to spiritual growth and development, equipping children to live a life of obedience to the Lord Jesus Christ. Every effort will be made to develop within children a spiritual knowledge base for making wise decisions about life and to develop both the spiritual and natural gifts of each child to a level appropriate for high school graduates.
Greater Beckley Christian School is dedicated to the education of children in accordance with the broad areas of development stated in Luke 2:52, "And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man." Therefore, attention will be given to the mental, physical, and social growth of children. The primary purpose of the academic program is to prepare students for some form of education beyond high school, perhaps Christian education, liberal arts education, or vocational education. Those choosing not to continue education beyond high school will be advanced academically for functioning as an adjusted and productive citizen of this nation.
Greater Beckley Christian School is dedicated to the evangelization of those children who may not be saved. This is especially true within the elementary school which will include a number of children who have not yet received the Lord Jesus Christ as personal Savior. However, evangelization will be carried out by teachers and mature students on a one-to-one basis. Evangelization, while very important and not to be minimized, will be secondary to the mission to edify and educate children as stated above.
Our Core Values
The Word of God
The Bible needs to be first and foremost in the educational process. It is the only thing on this earth that will last for eternity. Our children need to be taught its principles and precepts in order to truly be prepared to live a successful Christian life. We need to teach our children that the Bible can be trusted. It has the answers to the pressures they face daily (2 Peter 1:3). It is a "lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path" (Psalm 119:105).
We are dedicated to helping the family fulfill their biblical responsibility of raising their children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord (Ephesians 6:4). We cannot replace the parents, but we want to partner with you them to enable them to accomplish this most important task. We hope to incorporate avenues by which they can be directly involved in the education of their child. We desire that the educational process at GBCS will be a ministry of encouragement to our families.
We believe that the church is the primary institution through which God wants to accomplish His work today. GBCS is a ministry of the local church. We do not replace the local church and we will not work outside the authority of the local church. Though we exist as a ministry directly under the control of Faith Baptist Church, our desire is to be available to all the local churches in the greater Beckley area to assist them in providing a quality Christian education for their children. Therefore, it is vital for us to have the prayerful support of all the local churches represented in our student body.
We are in a spiritual battle for the minds, hearts and souls of our children. The world is trying to press our children into the mold of postmodernism, humanism, materialism, and every other kind of ungodly philosophy out there. The only way to be victorious in this spiritual battle is through the Word of God. We must teach our children a consistent biblical worldview that impacts every area of life. English, math, science, and every other subject is ultimately an illustration of God's handiwork in the creation of our universe. ONLY Christian education can provide a proper biblical worldview. We commit with our families to provide this kind of quality Christian education to their children.
Greater Beckley Christian School of Prosperity, WV was founded in 1973 as a ministry of Prosperity Fundamental Baptist Church (now Faith Baptist Church) for the purpose of providing a general education with high academic standards using subject matter taught from a Biblical perspective. Greater Beckley Christian School opened with thirty-nine students in kindergarten through grade three.
During the past five years the student body has averaged 203 students in grades K-12. Classes range in size between 15-20 students. Elementary (K-5th grades) students comprise approximately 45% of the student body and attend classes on the upper campus of the school--separate from the middle and high school campus.
Since 1983, the year of the first graduating class, 347 students have graduated from GBCS. The state of West Virginia began offering the Promise scholarship to graduating seniors in the spring of 2002. Since that time 33%-50% of Greater Beckley seniors have qualified for the scholarship, and of those students who have chosen to use the award nearly 100% have retained the scholarship throughout their college attendance. This compares to a state retention rate of 10%.
Greater Beckley students have consistently scored in the upper percentiles of all standardized tests including Explore, Plan, Terra Nova, ACT, and SAT tests. Graduates have proven their academic preparation by attending colleges and universities across the United States. Greater Beckley students have also won the state Golden Horseshoe contest and advanced to the state spelling bee level. In addition, our students have won state and national essay and poetry contests.
In 2006 Greater Beckley received candidacy status with the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI). We are currently fulfilling requirements for full accreditation with the ACSI organization. GBCS continually strives to provide an atmosphere in which students can grow spiritually while at the same time acquire an education of academic excellence founded upon a strong, Biblically based, college readiness curriculum.
Faculty members of Greater Beckley Christian School are certified through the West Virginia State Department of Education and/or the Association of Christian Schools International. Teachers vary in experience from one to over twenty-five years. This variety allows new teachers to draw on the experience of their peers.
All faculty members are required to participate in continuing education in order to stay abreast of up-to-date teaching innovations and techniques. Each member of the GBCS faculty and staff remains committed to the practice and ideology of quality Christian education.
The Helping Hands parents' organization plays a vital role at GBCS. This group, made up of elementary and secondary parents, serves many functions at the school. The leaders of the group help to organize parent volunteers and plan school functions. In addition, they play a pivotal role in ensuring that the communication process between parents, faculty, and staff remains open.
The group continues to grow and hopes to become more involved in other aspects of the day-to-day operation of the school.
GBCS offers two college preparatory diploma programs. The first requires students to take the advanced math and science courses of trigonometry and chemistry in addition to each of the general diploma requirements. A total of twenty-seven credits and a GPA that meets Promise Scholarship guidelines is required.
The second advanced college preparatory diploma requires the advanced courses of trigonometry, calculus, chemistry, and physics. A total of twenty-eight and a GPA that meets Promise Scholarship guidelines is required.
Seniors at GBCS are given the option of participating in a dual credit English and Bible program. Greater Beckley partners with Appalachian Bible College to offer college credit for English 101, English 102, Bible 101 (Bible Doctrine Overview) and Soc 103 (Foundations of Marriage and Family). If students choose not to attend ABC, credits can easily be transferred to the college of choice. Students are also given ACT and SAT preparation information beginning in their junior year. As seniors they also take a class devoted to scholarship and college entrance applications.
